Daigo's Confession

Synopsis

Visiting the hospital to see his grandmother, Shun runs into Daigo there. Daigo had apparently come to visit his mother, who is in a vegetative state. As Daigo begins to talk—'because of my father, who committed a crime, I fell into despair and attempted suicide'—Shun, flustered, tries to cut him off. But the next thing out of Daigo's mouth was Yuki's name. 'Yuki's family lost their lives because of my father. The president of Hotel New Sunisis is my father'—it was Daigo's own past, the one he had thought he 'would have to tell Shun someday.' Unable to hide his shock at the unexpected confession, Shun returns to the hospital room and asks his grandmother for something. A few days later, Shun is at home making the gratin his grandmother taught him. While cooking, he looks back on Daigo's words and actions up to now, senses what lay behind them, and is gripped by self-reproach. Carrying two servings of the finished gratin, Shun visits Daigo's room. Inside, there's nothing but things related to rescue. Shun talked cheerfully as always, but, sensing that Daigo's life had held nothing but 'rescue,' tears gradually spill out. Seeing this, Daigo tells him how he feels: 'Thank you. For becoming friends with someone like me, and for crying for my sake.'
